From Venice to the Amalfi Coast – Italy by Rail
Year after year, Italy is our top seller. And not because it’s trendy or flashy, but because it delivers something deeper.
Italy is the destination our clients come back from glowing, already planning the next visit before the laundry is even done. And we get it, since Italy doesn’t rush you. It invites you in.
You wake up to church bells echoing through narrow streets. You sip espresso standing at a bar like a local. You sit down for dinner “just for an hour” and suddenly it’s midnight, the wine is flowing, and life feels… lighter. Everyone comes back with the best memories.
Why We Love Showing Italy by Rail
Train travel in Italy isn’t just practical – it’s poetic. You glide from city to city without airports, without stress, without constantly packing and unpacking. You watch landscapes change through the window: vineyards, hills, coastline, pastel villages appearing like a painting coming to life.
You arrive directly in city centers, step off the platform, and suddenly you’re there. No transfers, no chaos – just Italy, waiting for you.
We are inviting you to embark on an unforgettable 13-day rail journey that takes you from the romantic canals of Venice, the artistry of Florence, the natural wonder of Cinque Terre, the eternal charm of Rome, and the coastal beauty of Sorrento.
This meticulously crafted journey is beautifully paced, carefully planned, and still leaves room for spontaneity – which, in Italy, is where the best moments usually happen anyway.
Trip Highlights:
1. Welcome to Venice! Make your way to St Mark’s Square for the start of your small group tour to the Doges Palace, and mesmerizing Golden Basilica. Following this, it is a guided walking tour through the quieter lanes and alleys, where you will see some architectural gems and historical buildings that are often overlooked by the crowds. More than any other city in the world, Venice's reputation precedes it. If you have not been before you are in for a treat, because this destination more than lives up to expectations!
2. Embark on your next train to the Renaissance of Art – Florence! Visit the world-famous Uffizi and Accademia galleries. The Uffizi Gallery is one of the most renowned art museums in the world. Inside, you will encounter a stunning collection of Renaissance masterpieces, including works by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Titian. The Accademia Gallery is home to one of the most iconic sculptures in the world, Michelangelo's David. Absorb all Florence has to offer as you walk the cobbled streets and admire the cathedrals.
3. From Florence, travel along the coast to La Spezia, then change for a short and wonderfully scenic regional train ride to Manarola. You will be met and shown to your own apartment. In the afternoon, venture to an ancient wine cellar in Manarola for a warm welcome, and tastings of local wines and nibbles. Explore Cinque Terre on your own, be it hiking the famous coastal path and enjoying the breath-taking views, riding the local train visiting each of the five gorgeous villages, or simply relaxing in your apartment and living life like a local.
4. Continue to Rome! Make your way over to the Colosseum for a guided tour of the famous Amphitheatre, then walk in the footsteps of ancient Romans once more with a guided stroll around the Roman Forum. These amazing ruins were for centuries the center of day-to-day life in Rome. Afterwards, why not head over to the Trevi Fountain or Spanish Steps and see more of the famous sightseeing attractions. Make time to stop for Gelato or Cacio E Pepe!
5. Arrive in Sorrento, your home for the next three days. Head to explore the famous Amalfi Coast. Travel in an air-conditioned mini-coach along spectacular coastal roads, stopping to visit the region’s three most popular and beautiful villages – Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. With tips from your knowledgeable guide, enjoy leisure time in each town to stroll narrow cobblestone streets and shop for unique handmade goods.
6. Get ready for another day of exploring, this time with a visit to Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius! Meet your driver-guide and enjoy Skip-The-Line access to these historic sights. After a relaxed stroll around the archaeological site of the ancient city of Pompeii, take a short hike up to the rim of the volcano to meet a mountain guide and peer into the crater’s rim.
