How to Pack for Europe Without Overpacking

If there's one question we hear from travelers before their European vacation, it's this: "What should I pack?"

It's a fair question. Packing for Europe can feel overwhelming, especially if it's your first time visiting.

You want to be comfortable for long sightseeing days, stylish enough for those charming European towns, and prepared for everything from beach afternoons to dinners overlooking the water. And you also need to be prepared for changing weather and lots of walking!

The secret to packing for Europe isn't bringing more clothes. It's bringing the right ones.

Whether you're spending your vacation in Italy, Greece, France, Croatia, Portugal, or beyond, your days will likely be a mix of relaxing, exploring, and a few unforgettable adventures. Packing with that rhythm in mind will make your trip much easier.

Build Your Suitcase Around Three Types of Days

When we help clients prepare for Europe, we suggest thinking about their outfits in three categories.

Relaxed Resort Days

If your itinerary includes beach destinations, islands, lakes, or coastal towns, you'll likely have days dedicated to slowing down.

These are the days for:

  • Swimsuits

  • Lightweight cover-ups

  • Linen shirts

  • Flowy dresses

  • Comfortable sandals

  • Breathable matching sets

Natural fabrics like linen and cotton are perfect for warm European summers, helping you stay cool while still looking polished enough to head straight from the beach to lunch.

Exploring Charming Towns

Many European destinations are made for wandering.

Historic centers are full of narrow streets, local cafés, flower-filled balconies, waterfront promenades, and hidden corners you'll discover simply by getting lost.

For these days, think effortless but polished: a sundress with comfortable sandals, linen pants paired with a simple top, a matching linen set, or clean white sneakers with a midi dress. These outfits photograph beautifully while still being comfortable enough for hours of exploring.

One thing many travelers notice after arriving in Europe is that people generally dress casually – but intentionally. You don't need formal clothing during the day, but a polished, relaxed look fits in almost anywhere.

Active Adventure Days

Then come the days that involve a little more movement.

Maybe you're hiking to a panoramic viewpoint, walking the ancient city walls of Dubrovnik, climbing castle towers, exploring archaeological sites, or spending an entire day sightseeing.

These are the days when comfort comes first.

Athletic wear, breathable tops, leggings or comfortable shorts, and supportive sneakers will make a huge difference. Europe often means far more walking than people expect, and comfortable shoes quickly become your most valuable travel companion.

If your itinerary includes hiking trails or longer walking tours, you'll be especially grateful for lightweight activewear that keeps you cool throughout the day.

Evenings Call for a Small Upgrade

One of the best parts of traveling in Europe is lingering over dinner.

Whether it's fresh seafood by the coast, homemade pasta in Italy, tapas in Spain, or wine in a charming town square, evenings often feel a little more special than they do at home.

That doesn't mean you need formal attire.

A simple dress, linen trousers with a nice blouse, a polo or button-down shirt, or an elevated casual outfit is usually perfect. Most restaurants strike a balance between stylish and relaxed, making it easy to dress up just a little without feeling overdressed.

Europe Loves Layers

Weather in Europe has a funny way of keeping travelers on their toes.

You may leave your hotel wearing a light jacket on a cool morning, peel it off by lunchtime under warm sunshine, and reach for it again while dining outside in the evening.

Even in summer, mornings can feel surprisingly crisp, especially in Northern Europe or mountainous regions. Spring and fall often bring sunshine, clouds, rain, and cool breezesč all in the same day.

That's why seasoned travelers rarely rely on one heavy jacket. Instead, they layer.

A comfortable T-shirt, a lightweight sweater, and a packable rain jacket can handle almost any forecast without taking up much room in your suitcase.

The Accessories You'll Use Every Day

Sometimes it's the smallest items that make the biggest difference.

Our clients almost always tell us they're glad they packed:

  • A crossbody bag for hands-free exploring

  • Sunglasses

  • A wide-brim hat or baseball cap

  • Sunscreen

  • A lightweight scarf for breezy evenings or visiting churches

These simple extras make long sightseeing days much more comfortable.

A Simple Packing Formula

One of the biggest misconceptions about packing for Europe is that you need a different outfit for every day.

In reality, a thoughtfully packed suitcase goes much further than an overpacked one.

A few versatile dresses. Two or three pairs of bottoms. Comfortable tops you can mix and match. One pair of sneakers you'll happily walk miles in. Sandals for warmer days. A light layer for cooler evenings.

With those basics, you can create plenty of outfits without ever feeling like you're wearing the same thing over and over.

If you're traveling for about 10 days, you really don't need 10 completely different outfits. Instead, consider packing:

  • 5–6 comfortable tops

  • 2–3 pairs of pants, jeans, or skirts

  • 1–2 dresses (if you enjoy wearing them)

  • 1 lightweight sweater

  • 1 waterproof jacket

  • Comfortable sneakers

  • A second pair of shoes, such as sandals, loafers, or flats

  • Sleepwear and undergarments

  • A few accessories like sunglasses, a scarf, and a crossbody bag

Most hotels and even local laundromats offer laundry facilities, making it easy to refresh your wardrobe during longer trips.

Our Best Packing Advice

If there's one piece of advice we share with almost every client, it's this:

Pack for the vacation you're actually taking – not the one you imagine.

Your days will be filled with scenic walks, spontaneous café stops, ferry rides, incredible viewpoints, local markets, and memorable dinners. You'll want clothes that let you enjoy every moment without worrying about sore feet, overheating, or dragging around an overstuffed suitcase.

Choose lightweight fabrics, comfortable shoes, and versatile outfits that can easily transition from sightseeing to dinner. You'll feel prepared for every adventure – and you'll look great in the vacation photos, too.

Pack light, pack smart, and leave a little room in your suitcase. You may just come home with a few European fashion finds of your own.
